Yesterday, designer\u00a0Maryam Nassir Zadeh\u00a0announced that her iconic New York storefront at\u00a0123 Norfolk Street would be closing down after 17 years.\u00a0The news marks the end of an era on the Lower East Side; not only was the shop a place for Nassir Zadeh to showcase her eponymous label, it became an important stop for discovering vintage finds and emerging designers. Even tourists loved the place\u2014the boutique had a write-up on the official NYC Tourism website.<\/p>\n

Norfolk Street may never be the same again,but first comes this weekend\u2019s close-out sale. The lines are sure to be long, while you wait, take a look at what some of Nassir Zadeh\u2019s closest collaborators, friends, and fans had to say about what the boutique meant to them. Maryam\u2019s shop was like her brand, like her clothes, it was the original version of itself. It wasn\u2019t trying, it wasn\u2019t pretending, it wasn\u2019t part of a marketing strategy. It was part of the city.<\/p>\n

On a quiet street, tucked between the Lower East Side and the East Village, no sign, no signage\u2014just a presence. This shop was a city guy, a kind of store that almost no longer exists, one that doesn\u2019t strain to be a flagship, an attraction, an event. Just a shop in the middle of life.<\/p>\n

A place you go to because you want to, because you seek it out. You leave the main avenues, take the route that feels right, cross streets that are more or less clean, more or less dark, and on 123 Norfolk Street: a large glass window welcomes you.<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s also a shop you walk past without paying attention; some might not even notice it, brush past it with their eyes. This shop is part of the landscape. But others know.<\/p>\n

They know that, like a film costume designer, Maryam Nassir Zadeh has frozen time, given form and body to the characters that are the essence of this city. All these outfits belong to real people. You glimpse them hanging or being worn and they remind you of someone. You are certain those persons exist. You envision them.<\/p>\n
